How CARLEX AI works.

CARLEX AI™ is Africa Care's clinical documentation and consultation-assistance engine — built to give healthcare professionals their time back, while every clinical decision stays exactly where it belongs: with the professional.

01What happens in a consultation

CARLEX sits alongside the clinician during or after the consultation. It never acts on its own, and nothing it produces reaches a patient record until the treating clinician has read it and approved it.

Step 1

The clinician dictates

The treating clinician speaks or types the consultation. CARLEX captures what the clinician provides — nothing more.

Step 2

CARLEX drafts

The engine structures that input into a draft clinical note, and can draft a script, referral or sick note from the same consultation.

Step 3

The clinician reviews

The draft is fully editable. The clinician corrects anything that is wrong. This step cannot be skipped.

Step 4

The clinician approves

Only on the clinician's approval does the content enter the patient record. The clinician remains the author.

02What CARLEX does — and does not do

✳ CARLEX does

  • Structure a dictated consultation into a draft clinical note
  • Draft prescriptions, referral letters, sick notes and discharge summaries for clinician review
  • Suggest ICD-10 codes against the South African PMB master list, for the clinician to confirm
  • Work across five official South African languages
  • Learn from the corrections a clinician makes to its drafts

✳ CARLEX does not

  • Diagnose a patient
  • Treat, or decide on treatment
  • Prescribe — it drafts a script that a clinician must review and sign
  • Make clinical decisions, or replace professional judgement
  • Communicate conclusions directly to a patient
  • Provide emergency assistance of any kind

03AI can make mistakes

CARLEX produces drafts, and drafts can be wrong. Output may be incomplete, may misinterpret dictation, or may suggest a code that does not fit the case. That is why review by the treating clinician is a required step rather than a recommended one, and why every draft remains editable until it is approved.

Where a clinician corrects a draft, that correction is used to improve future drafting for that clinician. The corrected version — not the original draft — is what enters the record.

04Whose data, and under whose authority

Patient information is processed on the authority of the treating clinician or practice, who remains the responsible party under POPIA. Africa Care acts as an operator processing that information on their behalf. Patient consent is handled by the practice in the course of care.

How information is stored, secured, retained and shared — and the rights patients hold over it — is set out in our Privacy Policy, and the platform's AI use policy is section 09 of our Terms & Conditions.

✳ Clinical responsibility

Africa Care is healthcare technology, not a healthcare provider. CARLEX AI™ supports registered healthcare professionals with documentation and practice workflows. It does not diagnose, treat, or prescribe. All clinical information generated with the platform is reviewed, edited and approved by the responsible healthcare professional, who retains full clinical responsibility for patient care.
